Lily's yoga classes draw from her appetite for movement by integrating the energizing grace of vinyasa flow with a focus on dynamic alignment. Challenging yet nurturing, she provides a safe space for students to play with their own perceived limitations. Her classes generate internal heat through vigorous posture flows, simultaneously allowing one to find length in the muscles and fascia of the body and openness in the nadis, or energy pathways of the body. Designed to still the mind, open the heart, and melt tension in the body, her classes guide students deeper into their own yogic inquiry. She appreciates equally the sweaty, fluid, athletic vinyasa sequence as much as the spacious, soft, reflective moments in practice, checking in with the internal flow. Lily's classes support a space for exploration, expansion, integration, and self inquiry. Having encountered and healed several orthopedic injuries in her dance career, she is dedicated to teaching compassionately and believes deeply in the healing power of movement.
My approach to vinyasa flow is traditional in many ways. We start with chanting and pranayama, move into asana and end with relaxation. However, it is unique for its emphasis on core strength, fluid movement, non-linear transitions, wave like movement to more three-dimensionally emody form and undulation to nourish the spinal disks and spark the fire of the belly. We initiate vinyasa movements from the center of the body, so that even as we work the flexibility of the limbs we are maintaining core support to stabilize and protect the hips and lower back. Whereas the core is sometimes thought of as the "6 pack" muscles, in this class we will look a bit deeper, integrating pelvic floor, transverse abdominus, bandhas and on up to serratus anterior (core for all our arm balances and inversion work!). We also re-think the core of our body to be more like the core of an apple - the entire center core from pelvic floor to crown of the head (what energetically may be referred to as shoshumna nadi (central channel)) and moving from the inside out so our transitions are more fluid, less rigid - and we are developing strength that is supple, pleasurable, fluid and fascially integrated - like a movement massage!
Lily also works individually with students in private sessions.
